The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.
The G.I. Joe team is framed for crimes against the country by Zartan, disguised as the President, and Cobra Commander has all the world leaders under his influence, with their advanced warheads headed towards innocent populaces around the world. Outnumbered and outgunned, the surviving team members form a plan with their original leader, General Joseph Colton, to rescue the President and face off Cobra Commander, his accomplices and the world leaders.
In 2009, GI Joe hit the big screen with Rise of the Cobra. It would come to be loathed by both established fans and common viewers, seeing it as an overloaded, cartoony mess of a movie with absolutely no good justice done to the GI Joe franchise. I personally always knew this movie was bad, but it came to be one of my top guilty pleasures, thanks to its fantastically explosive and ambitious action sequences, its high-speed pacing, and overall lightheartedness, which makes it every bit as fun and endearing of an adventure as Stephen Sommers&#39; other films.<br/><br/>Now, like any other sequel, this new GI Joe film is released with the promise of making things &quot;better.&quot; Jon Chau sets out to make GI Joe far less cartoony, far darker, and much more like an actual action movie, rather than whatever the heck Rise of the Cobra was. Retaliation still has some cool hardware; some of the most inventive scenes include an awesome morphing motorcycle, robotic fireflies, and a boat with tank treads. Some of the funnest action scenes include a high-flying pursuit along ziplines on a mountain, complete with ninjas, plus plenty of gunfights, swordfights, and explosive vehicular mayhem.<br/><br/>This may all sound like great stuff for action fans. The problem is, the action is spaced out a lot more than in the first film, so the pacing suffers. Plus, most of the action is strangely drab and uninspired; the gunfights throughout the first half play out with little ambition or distinction, looking no different than any other action or war movie on the market. The real magic of GI Joe, with all the gizmos and cool fights, didn&#39;t sink in until the last half.<br/><br/>Even with the action spread out, the story doesn&#39;t really take the time to breathe. It&#39;s strangely choppy; plot points are slapped together without any transition or sense of passage, so the logos of the whole thing is royally screwed up. Characters continue to make stupid decisions, and stupid events continue to take place (especially in the film&#39;s finale, which despite its ambition might be one of the most ridiculous things I&#39;ve seen in a while). Characterization is mostly absent, and actually felt stronger in the first film. Overall, this is not the film to see if you want a quality story, much less one that makes sense or has actual depth or feeling.<br/><br/>This film is made with adequate photography; there are plenty of cool-looking shots, but most fights are shot really close and with some erratic shaking, making it a little annoying to watch half of the time. Editing is good on a shot-by-shot basis, but the cutting of the scenes is too screwy to make the film work. Acting from the main cast is pretty bland, and I was especially mortified by the RZA&#39;s acting in his cameo appearance. Writing is awful, with really stupid dialogue and terrible plotting. The best that can be said is that this production uses okay-looking sets, props, costumes, and Henry Jackman&#39;s score is awesome at times.<br/><br/>GI Joe: Retaliation has its exciting parts, but it&#39;s brought down tremendously by its lackluster characters, its hole-ridden plot, and mediocre execution. I&#39;d even go so far as to say that it lacks the ambition of Rise of the Cobra; I&#39;ll always go back to that first film, even with its own set of horrid issues, just to experience the awesome Paris car chase, the sub-glacial submarine battle, and every other awesome thing Stephen Sommers could come up with. By comparison, Jon Chau&#39;s film is far less fun, even when it tries so hard to be cool.<br/><br/>If I&#39;d recommend this to anybody, it would probably be to younger PG-13 crowd, who would go to this for the action rather than the story anyway. Die-hard franchise fans will probably dig it too. Most everybody else will probably find it disgusting.<br/><br/>3/5 (Entertainment: Good | Story: Marginal | Film: Marginal)
I didn&#39;t enjoy this exploding mess of a movie. Most action movies have some ridiculous elements but the plot is just not coherent and logical even for this kind of movie.<br/><br/>The story: This is a confusing movie. Unless you are familiar with the different comic book characters. There are a lot of new characters. Too many different people fighting each other. Who was fighting who was just too hard to figure out. It seems popular to have a grand story but the global nuclear thing is just overblown for the scope of this movie. Kidnap and punch the President is a bit old now.<br/><br/>Action: Lots of fighting but a bit too much of the same thing. Felt I was watching another movie with the Rock but I wan&#39;t sure which one. <br/><br/>Cast: Some newcomers including the exotic Skyfall&#39;s Elodie Yung and Friday Night Light&#39;s Adrianne Palicki who is quite a good action heroine. DJ Cotrona looks a bit expressionless. Big role for Korean actor Byung who was in Red 2. Bruce Willis does his cameo with out much action. Quite surprising having Channing Tatum die early on.<br/><br/>I don&#39;t think they need another GI Joe anything.
So fetishistic about high-powered weapons that it qualifies as an NRA wet dream, G.I. Joe: Retaliation pretty accurately reflects the franchise's comic book and cartoon origins, which is both a good and a bad thing: good if you're a 12- to 15-year-old boy, bad if you're just about anyone else.
The entire question is left deliberately vague. We are told that both the GI Joes in the field and at their base have been wiped out with the exception of Snake Eyes, Roadblock, Lady Jaye and Flint. However, we never see it and it is perfectly possible that any of the characters may have survived in the same way that the main characters in this film did or simply left GI Joe in between this film and its predecessor. The only character we know to be dead for sure is Duke whom we know is killed in the desert attack. Yes and no. In the UK, the classic 9-inch GI Joe doll was called Action Man. Inspired by the success of Star Wars figures in the early 1980s, a smaller 3-inch version was introduced called Action Force. A backstory was published in a series of tie-in comics (Battle Action Force) with the terrorist army of Baron Ironblood and his Red Shadows attempting to take over the world and combated by the United Nation&#39;s own military unit, Action Force (composed of Z-force infantry company, SAS-force special operations team, Q-force naval squadron and Space Force star fleet). In 1987, Marvel UK launched the Action Force comic (initially a standalone title, but later appearing in the UK Transformers comic under the name &quot;G.I. Joe the Action Force&quot;). These were a mix of reprints of the US G.I. Joe comic book, and new UK-exclusive strips. The additional stories resulted in the UK version having a considerably different continuity to the US comic book, with major characters such as Zartan having completely different origins. Destro was left ambiguously in the tube while Storm Shadow and Cobra Commander escaped. Since the explosion caused by the warden took out the cooling system, we are left to surmise that he either died in the explosion, or in the resulting over-200-degree temperature. Alternatively though he may have survived so is either still a prisoner or was freed from his tube by the explosion and escaped. Cobra doesn&#39;t release him, simply stating, &quot;You&#39;re out of the band.&quot; It&#39;s likely that <a href="/name/nm0001172/">Christopher Eccleston</a> wasn&#39;t available to reprise his role or possibly the writers felt that there wouldn&#39;t have been much of a use for him in this particular film and so thought it best to leave him out but not arbitrarily kill him off. No, because the self-destruct mechanisms don&#39;t actually create a nuclear explosion, they destroy the warhead without triggering the fissile material so the fallout would be minimal. Considerably. For instance in the comics, Duke is a First Sergeant whilst in the film he is a Captain. Cobra Commander himself never knew Duke, was never a maimed soldier but a car salesman who turned against America after the failure of his business and death of his brother in the Vietnam War. In the British Action Force backstory, he was Marcus Kassels, the disgraced son of an aristocratic Swiss diplomat and scientific genius, and who served in the British Army and led a US platoon nicknamed &quot;The Baron&#39;s Brigade&quot; in the Korean War before being accused of a massacre of civilians. He fled to Africa where he became a mercenary, fighting in conflicts all over the world before forming his own private terrorist army, the Red Shadows and adopting the alias Baron Ironblood, based on his family&#39;s Latin motto of &quot;Sanguineo Ferris&quot; (&quot;our blood is of iron&quot;). After numerous defeats at the hands of Action Force he would abandon the Red Shadows and form the Cobra organisation, adopting the new identity of Cobra Commander. The &quot;Extended Action Cut&quot; is quite well named with this title because it is substantially better than the theatrical version—not only in the action department. A number of more violent moments are back, a few large ones that are completely new and surprisingly much more character development that even leads to some minor changes in the story. While American audiences will have to be patient to get their hands on the extended cut (it is Best Buy exclusive for the first weeks), British customers have it easier. All Blu-ray disc editions feature both the theatrical and the Extended Cut. In total, the Extended Cut runs approximately 12 minutes longer than the well-known theatrical version.
